The biometric question, answered

Is seat-based check-in less secure than biometric?

It defends a different, more common gap. Biometric is hard to spoof at the door but says nothing about whether a student stayed. Seat check-in is taken inside the room during the lecture, is watched live by the professor, and enforces one seat per student per session — closing the routes that make proxy attendance widespread.

Do students need a special device?

No dedicated hardware. Students check in from their own device against the classroom layout your IT-Admin sets up once — there are no readers, turnstiles, or per-room installs.

What about a student who doesn’t have a phone that day?

The professor can see the live seat map and mark or adjust a seat directly, so a one-off missing device doesn’t leave a student unrecorded.

Can we keep our existing biometric system alongside it?

Yes. Institutions often keep biometric for staff entry or campus access and use AttendMetric for classroom attendance, where a door scanner was never a good fit.
